SUMAGASHI

Sumagashi is an East Asian form of marbling. It began by dragging a piece of paper through a fermented flour paste mixed with different colours. A second type was made with a paste prepared with honey locusts pods, mixed with croton oil and thinned with water. The art was also used in Ottoman Turkey and India. In these places, new methods were developed that made the colours float on the surface of a bath of viscous liquid.

1. Fill a tray with a small amount of water.

2. Drop a small amount of acrylic paint into the water and mix it around to prime the water

3. Drop the colour paints you want into the tray and mix them around to get the pattern that you want.

4. Place a piece of paper onto the ink and leave it for around 10 seconds.

5. Take the paper off of the water and leave it to dry.
